Since the Orthman Community YMCA opened its doors in October 2014, it has been a symbol of health, community, and personal growth for many, including long-time members Darrell and Sally Leu. Their story is a testament to the significant influence of the YMCA, which has become an integral part of their daily lives.
THE JOURNEY BEGINS
The YMCA journey for the Leus began long before the new facility opened in Lexington. Sally fondly recalls her junior high days participating in youth group programs at the Norfolk YMCA. “I’m glad we have it,” Sally said, referring to the Orthman Community YMCA. “We all need to work out a little bit.” Darrell echoes her sentiments, noting the improvements and opportunities the new facility offered compared to their previous fitness group.
Their first impressions of the Orthman Community YMCA were filled with awe. “I’m sure I was impressed with all the machines and opportunities,” Sally notes, recalling her first visit to the new Y facility. Darrell adds, “There was a lot more stuff available and also a lot more people. And it’s been growing and growing, so that’s been good too.”
LIFELONG MOTIVATION
For over a decade, the Y has played a pivotal role in the lives of the Leus. “Everybody knows that if you don’t exercise enough, your body doesn’t keep up, so it’s good to exercise and just keep going forward,” Darrell remarks. The Y motivates them to start their day with purpose. “It gets us up in the morning and gives us something to get the day started,” says Darrell.
As they’ve aged, staying active at the Y has been crucial. Darrell jokingly warns, “If you become a couch potato, you’re going to end up in the potato patch.” When asked why she has stayed involved in the Y for over a decade, Sally humorously remarks, “The scale!” While Darrell primarily uses the exercise equipment at the Y, Sally enjoys classes like Balance and Mobility, highlighting the range of programs at the Y that cater to different interests and needs.
FINDING A SENSE OF COMMUNITY
The Y is not just a place for physical activity; it’s a thriving community. “That’s another big plus, the social time we get,” Darrell remarks, emphasizing the friendships and connections they’ve built over the years. Referring to their social time with the morning coffee group, Darrell adds, “It amounts to about as much as the exercise some days.” In addition, the warm and knowledgeable staff, especially Wellness Director Terri Burch, make the Leu’s feel welcomed and valued.
Reflecting on their journey, Sally and Darrell express their gratitude for the Orthman Community YMCA. “I’d be disappointed if we didn’t have it,” Sally says. Darrell adds, “It’s just amazing to see all the age groups that get involved right from the youngsters up through us oldsters. It’s good for everybody.”
A PLACE FOR ALL
For those considering joining the Y, Darrell offers simple yet powerful advice: “It’s a good place to go.” Whether you’re utilizing the free 80+ Golden Membership like the Leu’s, or paying your way, the value and community offered by the Y are undeniable. Darrell comments, “It’s a good value even if you have to pay your way in. There is plenty here and things that you couldn’t have on your own.”
Darrell and Sally Leu’s story is a powerful reminder of the YMCA’s role in fostering health, happiness, and togetherness. Their journey inspires others to embrace wellness and community, proving that at any age, the Y is a place where everyone belongs.
