Moving Forward: How the NuStep Helps Members of All Abilities Stay Active

From early mornings to late afternoons, the steady rhythm of the NuSteps fills the wellness center at the Don Sjogren Community YMCA. From seniors recovering after surgery to individuals rebuilding strength and mobility, these low-impact cardio machines are a favorite among members of all ages. For member Manuel Aldama, the NuStep has become more than just exercise equipment; it’s a vital tool helping him stay strong, active, and connected to the community.

Accessible Fitness For Everyone

The branch’s five NuStep machines are in high demand throughout the day, often all in use at once. Don Sjogren Community YMCA’s Branch Director, Joel Pelster, says the machines are popular because they’re easy to use and approachable to members at any fitness level.

“Our Active Adults tend to use the machines the most,” Joel explains. “We also have a lot of people recovering from surgery who prefer the NuStep because they are less stressful on the body, especially the knees.”

Beyond accessibility, the NuStep plays an important role in helping the YMCA live out its mission of supporting healthy living for all. “We want to be inclusive to all members and have machine options that don’t scare them away,” Joel said. “The NuSteps also allow members with disabilities the opportunity to use the machines.”

Due to the machines having made such an impact over the years, the YMCA is looking towards making upgrades to the NuSteps. “We are looking to upgrade at least two of the machines as they do get a lot of traffic and are in need of an upgrade,” Joel said.

Strength Through Movement

For 46-year-old Manuel Aldama, staying active is a daily commitment. Although he didn’t stick to a workout schedule originally, after becoming a quadriplegic, he turned to the YMCA to continue working on mobility and strength. “That’s what really got me to the YMCA,” Manuel said. “I needed to stay active and keep my range of motion going.”

After making the YMCA a part of his regular routine over the last 5 months, the NuStep quickly became his go-to machine. “With the easy transfer and being able to set it and get all the range of motion and movement I need, it’s been one of my favorites to work out on.”

Manuel’s typical routine at the YMCA starts with two laps around the gym using his walker before moving to the NuStep, where he completes 20 minutes on load 7—averaging about 2,000 steps each session. Since beginning this routine, he’s noticed significant progress. “I’m able to stand for a longer period of time. I can walk longer distances. And my body doesn’t hurt as much while I’m walking,” he shared. “It also makes it easier for me to do my own transfers and everything here at home.”

More Than Machines

At the YMCA, the benefits of the NuStep go beyond just physical fitness. The area around the machines has become a place for conversation, encouragement, and community. “The conversations at the machines are so wonderful,” Joel said. “I look forward to my conversations with the noon group. They share a lot of wisdom, but there are a lot of laughs too.”

Manuel echoed that same sense of community and belonging. “As soon as I walk through the doors, everyone is so welcoming and kind, whether it’s a smile or someone asking how my day has been or if I need any help,” he said.

Moving Forward, Together

From helping members recover from injury to empowering individuals like Manuel to keep moving forward, the NuSteps at the Don Sjogren Community YMCA represent more than just fitness; they represent the Y’s mission in action. Each stride is a reminder that health and community go hand in hand—and that at the YMCA, there’s always a place for everyone to keep growing stronger together.
