To know Sandy Hock was to be inspired by her friendly energy, her passion, and her sense of joy. Whether in the classroom, the pool, or at the bridge table, Sandy approached life with enthusiasm and a deep sense of purpose.
As a Family and Consumer Science teacher, Sandy shaped young lives and was passionate about her profession. But it was perhaps in the water where Sandy’s spirit came to life. A familiar and devoted member of the YMCA at Gothenburg Health, Sandy swam with a dedication that was impossible to miss. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings, and again on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, Sandy could be found in the pool, participating in various water aerobics classes with “The Mermaids.”
“She got there, she got ready, and then she was in the pool!” said fellow swimmer Cathy Hanson. “She knew it was important to exercise. She got there, did it, and went on with her routines.” That discipline wasn’t just about checking a box, it was about embracing a lifestyle that celebrated health, joy, and community.
FASHION FIRST
Even in the pool, Sandy’s flair for fashion couldn’t be missed. Friend Judy Wixson said, “She was very fashionable, even in her exercise,” remembering how Sandy always wore a different swimsuit, each a reflection of her outgoing, vibrant personality. YMCA Branch Director Julie Czochara remarked, “She was smart, fun,
personable and had more swimsuits with matching water shoes than anyone I have ever known.” Sandy’s vibrant personality shown through more than her swimwear as she enjoyed each and every class. “She loved the water and loved the fun music we played in our water aerobics class,” said Czochara.
LEADERSHIP BEYOND THE CLASSROOM
Sandy wasn’t just a teacher and a swimmer, she was a leader. Her presence in the YMCA aquatic classes elevated everyone around her. “She pushed us so that we would do more and do better,” said Hanson. “She liked to mix it up so we weren’t doing the same routine over and over again.”
Wixson echoed that admiration. “[Sandy] was one of the most dedicated swimmers or exercisers that I’ve ever met!” she said. “She would be kind of our leader in figuring things out and wanting something new. And so she was very dedicated to her exercise program. She just loved it!”
A LASTING IMPRESSION
Beyond the routines and swimsuits, it was Sandy’s joy that left the most lasting impression. “She enjoyed life,” said Hanson. “Whether she was exercising or teaching or volunteering or playing bridge, she enjoyed life.” Her absence is felt deeply amongst the Gothenburg community. “We miss her in our group,” Hanson shared. “You know, there’s a spot in the pool where she’s supposed to be.”
That empty space speaks volumes. It is a reminder that Sandy’s presence was more than physical; it was motivational, joyful, and warm. She lifted people up by simply being her active, stylish, kind, and dedicated self.
Sandy Hock may no longer swim beside “The Mermaids,” but the ripples she left behind continue to move through the lives she touched. Her example inspires others to dive deeper, live fuller, and embrace every moment, whether in the classroom, in the pool, or simply among friends.
Czochara says, “To say that Sandy was just a Y member would be such an understatement. She was the ringleader of ‘The Mermaids’ and always encouraged the ladies with some new moves and exercises. She is a gem that will truly be missed. Her personality still shines bright at the Gothenburg YMCA.”
