For the Max family, the YMCA at Gothenburg Health is more than a building—it’s a daily part of life, a place where health, family time, and community come together.
After eight years of active membership, the Y has become woven into their family story. Whether they’re playing sports, swimming, attending summer camps, or getting in a good workout, the Maxes embody what it means to grow stronger as a family through the YMCA.
Finding Motivation and Balance
As a physical therapist at the hospital attached to the YMCA, Kelsey knows firsthand how important movement is for long-term health. Her days are full, but carving out time to work out at the YMCA has become something she genuinely looks forward to. “I enjoy working out at the YMCA for the variety it provides. I can lift weights, do cardio machines, walk on the track, or do the water fitness class,” Kelsey says. The welcoming environment helps her stay consistent as well. “It is motivating to be around other people who are working out,” she comments. “It is also conveniently right next to where I work.”
With her clinic sitting just steps away from the YMCA, Kelsey sees how valuable that connection can be for her patients. “Having our clinic right next to the YMCA allows us to use the equipment to make exercise more challenging for patients. It is also great for athletes to assess and use for running, jumping, and sports-specific activities.”
The YMCA’s impact is often felt far beyond therapy sessions. “When a patient finishes therapy, we offer them a free 30 days to the YMCA to continue exercising,” says Kelsey. This partnership is what helps people transition from recovery to confidence.
Growing Stronger Together
Just like their dad enjoys playing Adult Coed Volleyball, the boys enjoy participating in YMCA youth sports. “Our kids look forward to every YMCA
sport and have tried new things as well, such as soccer,” Kelsey says. The YMCA has helped the Max boys grow in confidence and social skills. “The youth sports programs have motivated my kids to exercise and learn a sport that they enjoy. Swimming at the YMCA has also improved their confidence to swim independently,” she remarks.
Besides beloved sports programs, this year brought new adventures for the boys. “August tried the esports league for the first time this year, and it is helping him learn to be competitive in a positive
way,” says Kelsey. When reflecting on a favorite YMCA memory, August says, “I like the Summer Camp day trips.” While his brother Tucker replies, his favorite was “Getting better at catching the ball in football this year.” The confidence and skills they are gaining are a key factor in the Max family’s continued involvement at the YMCA.
A Family Strengthened By Community
With so many opportunities to stay active, build friendships, and grow in confidence, the YMCA continues to be a meaningful part of the Max family’s lives. Kelsey says, “We really enjoy getting out of the house and being active together, whether we come to the YMCA to swim or play in the gym.” When thinking of what makes the YMCA at Gothenburg Health so special, Kelsey adds, “I enjoy the people that come to the YMCA. It is a happy and motivating place to be.”
The most notable aspect of the Max family is how they use the YMCA as a shared space for connection. They explore new activities together and enjoy the simple joy of being active side by side.
Their story is a reminder of what makes the YMCA at Gothenburg Health special—the laughter of kids racing across the gym, the encouragement between friends and neighbors, and the kind of community where families like the Maxes truly belong.
